SPIDER-MAN responds to Tony nominations; Free tickets on

Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris, producers of SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark, today made a special, unprecedented Tony-related announcement in response to the show's receipt of only two Tony nominations. The high flying production will hold a special Tony Sunday performance at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, for which anyone with the first name Anthony, Tony, Antoinette, Toni, or Antonio will be eligible to receive a free ticket.

“It has been brought to our attention that the Tonys have been honoring Broadway for years, and we thought it was about time to repay the favor,” Cohl and Harris said in a joint statement. They added, “Nothing would make us prouder than to have more Tonys than any other show on Broadway on Sunday, June 10.”

Well, I certainly hope that the people nominated from their show were not planning to attend the actual award that night. I feel this action could blow up in their face. Maybe I'm just reading too much into this. But, instead of making this fun, it sounds more like a spiteful event. Even if I had one of those names, I wouldn't want to go.

They should be grateful for the two nods that they did get.

What's interesting is that given how the awards have been the past couple of years, SPIDER-MAN was almost guaranteed the ability to perform on the show. They're really just being big babies here stomping their feet and crying.

That's so stupid. But I don't mind if Tony Yazbeck needs me to be his plus one.

Your name must be Anthony.

They must not be selling well for that day if they've got enough space to give so many away.

Are you guys serious? They're not being childish. They're having fun and having a sense of humor. There's nothing "spiteful" about this.

I thinks it's delightfully hilarious.

I think it's an inspired stunt. But so rude to Eiko Ishioka who has passed and truly deserves the award for her incredible costumes in this show.

^ I think it would be funnier if their show wasn't nominated at all and it didn't have all the drama surrounding it that it does.

“It has been brought to our attention that the Tonys have been honoring Broadway for years, and we thought it was about time to repay the favor,”

So they didn't know what the Tony Awards were until someone told them? Doesn't surprise me.

Mildred,

You really don't see the snark? Really? I refuse to believe that.

Really? In such a small community, I would believe it is your best bet to constantly display a positive and supportive attitude, even if it is only in public.

If they expect to keep producing, it is in their best interest to keep their enemies close - attitudes like these can't bring anything good to their Broadway future.

It does seem a bit childish. Sort of like, "Screw you guys, I'm goin' home."

I think it's amusing.

The show is at 3:00 so they can still perform on the telecast if invited.

The nominees wouldn't have to be at the "special performance" anyway.

And for the record, the producers and cast have been very active in the community raising money for charities.

Really, this is just a joke meant in the spirit of self deprecation and good nature.

If LEAP OF FAITH doesn't perform, I really hope the Tonys don't invite SPIDER-MAN now. This is so stupid and childish. And I personally don't think it's clever at all.
